The Black Adder Speaks

Excerpts from the BBC TV series, The Black Adder I

"In 1486, the second year of Richard IV's historic reign and also the year that the egg replaced the worm as the lowest form of currency, King Richard departed England on a Crusade against the Turks.

He left behind him his beloved son Harry to rule as Regent in his stead.....

And his slimy son Edmond to do the tasks most befitting him."

As we join our hero...

@ (Audio ~69K bytes) After "twelve months of chasing sheep and straightening the royal portraits", Edmond is told by Harry that the King will be back by Saint Leonard's Day, and that Edmond must plan the "frolics" in celebration of both events.

Edmond:
The frolics?
Harry:
Yes, the morris dancers, the eunuchs, and the bearded women. You know, the traditional Saint Leonard's Day entertainments.

@ (Audio ~21K bytes) Meanwhile, Countess Celia attempts to share with the queen her excitement in anticipation of the King's return and the accompanying celebrations. The queen, however is distracted by thoughts of "the great brown ox steaming and smoldering all night long".

Celia:
The morris dancers. I love them!

@ (Audio ~49K bytes) Edmond, joined in his chamber by Lord Percy and Baldric is planning the entertainments. Unfortunately, they only have one decent act and she has shaved her beard off. Worst of all the eunuchs have cancelled!

Percy:
We could have the morris dancers, my lord.
Edmond:
Now look, we are not that desperate!

@ (Audio ~43K bytes) He continues...

Edmond:
Morris dancing is the most fatuous, tenth rate entertainment ever devised by man.

@ (Audio ~63K bytes) He's not done yet...

Edmond:
Forty effeminate blacksmiths waving bits of cloth they've just wiped their noses on. How it goes on in this day and age I'll never know.

@ (Audio ~62K bytes) When Edmond tells Harry that the Eunuchs have been cut, Harry explains that that just will not do.

Harry:
To leave out the eunuchs on Saint Leonard's Day would be like... Well, it would be like leaving out the morris dancers or the... or the bearded women.
